Rangitoto Print

A beautiful print of the island of the Hauraki Gulf.

The legend:

One legend tells of an argument between a couple. The couple were children of the fire gods who lived in the Tāmaki Makaurau area. During their argument, they cursed the fire deity, Mahuika. Mahuika heard this curse and told Mataoho - the god of earthquakes and eruptions. Mataoho sent an eruption to destroy the couple’s mainland home on behalf of Mahuika.

The couple’s home was swallowed by the earth, and became Lake Pupuke on the North Shore. At the same time, Rangitoto rose from the sea. When mist cloaks Rangitoto, it is said to be the couple’s tears as they weep for their lost home.
