The legend:

Ngā Kohatu Whakarakaraka o Tamatea Pōkai Whenua is one name for the Port Hills. The name describes the actions of the renowned explorer Tamatea Pōkai Whenua. Tamatea is said to have climbed the hills to gaze down upon the vast plains to the west. While at the top, he was caught in a ferocious southerly storm that froze him in his tracks. Tamatea began to recite karakia, seeking the assistance of Ngātoroirangi, a powerful tohunga from the central North Island district. He asked Ngātoroirangi, to send warmth to his people via the earth (i.e. geothermal activity). The full name means ‘the smouldering boulders of Tamatea Pōkai Whenua.
