Kāpiti is named after a very important event in the history of Aotearoa. According to legend, when Kupe arrived in Aotearoa, there was only one island. He created the North and South Islands by standing on the ground and pushing his feet apart. Kāpiti’s full name is Te Kāpiti Waewae, which means ‘legs spread apart’.
