The legend:

The legend of Kohinerākau is one of love and betrayal. Patangata and Pukehou Marae tell the story of the male mountains of Kauehei and Kahurānaki, who were both in love with the forest maiden, Kohinerākau. Kohinerākau was having trouble choosing so asked Te Mata to help her decide. Te Mata found that while Kahuranāki was the tallest and most majestic, Kauehei was the wisest, with more mana. Over time, Te Mata found himself falling in love with Kohinerākau. Te Mata eventually decided Kahurānaki could stay closest to Kohinerākau, but he had to be separated from her by the Tukituki river. He could look but not touch. Kauehei was able to remain on the same side of the river but was moved 15 kilometres to the south so was also out of reach. Meanwhile, Te Mata o Rongokako remained in permanent contact with Kohinerākau with the other two Maunga looking on in longing and in betrayal.
